The Wujing Zongyao, or Collection of the Most Important Military Techniques, was an officially commissioned Song military compendium compiled by Zeng Gongliang, Ding Du, and colleagues around the 1040s. Its two major sections cover military organization, frontier defense, geography, formations, weapons, logistics, and strategic thought, gathering information for state and military use. The work is notable for preserving early descriptions of gunpowder recipes and incendiary devices, evidence for a stage in the development of Chinese military technology. These passages should not be mistaken for descriptions of mature cannon or modern firearms. Maps, fortifications, and operational discussions also reflect the Northern Song’s concern with defense against powerful neighbors. As a compilation, the book combines inherited accounts with contemporary material, and the reliability and date of individual sections can differ. A written prescription does not demonstrate that a tactic was universally practiced in battle. Its value lies in documenting how the state classified military knowledge and in providing evidence for the institutional, technical, and strategic concerns of the period.
